What Happened to the Seasons?

What ever happened to the seasons in sports? Growing up as kids, we knew what sport season it was.  It was either by the weather or by the calendar. Today, we don’t know what season it is either by the weather or the calendar. We’ve seen the weather change drastically. Look at the twenty inches of rain Atlanta received last month. Look at last Sunday’s game between the New England Patriots and the Tennessee Titans. It’s the middle of October and it looked like a full blown blizzard. I know there may be something to the global warming thing, but why has the sporting season changed?

Right now, baseball is now in it’s playoffs and the way it looks, the world series will go into the month of November when the world series should had ended by Columbus Day. This is not fair to the sport and to the fans. Why would you have a night game in the month of October in Denver, Colorado? How about attending a game in Philly where nighttime temperatures dip into the upper thirties. We’re seeing ball players wearing baseball caps with ear muffs. One player wore a Ninja type ski mask to keep him warm. Let’s go even further. The super bowl would be played after the college bowl games, which normally ended on New Years Day. Yes, we still have bowl games on New Years Day, but now we have the B.C.S. Championship game that extends several days past Jan. 1, which moves the Super Bowl up to February. Thank goodness the Super Bowl games are held either in a domed stadium or in warm weather cities, so that the playing conditions are ideal for both teams in mid winter. Switching over to basketball. What ever happen to March Madness? It would finish by the end of that month; it’s now been extended to April, after the baseball season begins. The N.B.A. finals use to end around Mothers Day. Now the finals, “if it goes to seven games” won’t finish until the last week in June.  The N.H.L. starts their season early in September and they even extended their playoff season to the warm month of June. A few years ago, I was in Durham, North Carolina in early June when that city won the Stanley Cup Championship. The outside temps, were close to 90. Soccer seems to be a year round game. If you tune onto any of the foreign speaking channels, you would see games from around the world. At this time, all the major sports are now being played simultaneously. I feel the bottom line is greed, and T.V. ratings have taken over sports, which is not fair to the players and to fans. Football is a fall sport Basketball and Hockey are winter sports, Baseball is a spring, and summer sport, and It should be that way.

This article has a lot of validity to it. I recognized some of the things Wilfred mentioned and wondered about them myself. Thanks for addressing them so that I don’t feel “Is something wrong with me?”Baseball did have an earlier season ending.
