The Los Angeles Galaxy drew 0-0 with Toronto FC during the World Cup Send off

Landon Donovan and Edson Buddle were named to the preliminary 30-man U.S. squad for the 2010 World Cup.

CARSON, CALIF – LA Galaxy hoped their efforts at home against Toronto FC on Saturday, May 15th would have yielded a win, on the night that served as the World Cup send off for Edson Buddle and Landon Donovan.  The only problem was – Neither team found the back of the net.

Before 20,007 fans at the Home Depot Center, the LA Galaxy and Toronto FC drew 0-0.  The fans displayed much excitement about the possibilities of Buddle and Donovan making the trip to South Africa.  They held signage that read, “World Cup – Buddle and Donovan, USA–In it to win it.”

Both players were named to the preliminary 30-man U.S. squad for the 2010 World Cup.  Donovan was no surprise, but U.S. National team coach Bob Bradley indicated Buddle’s form this season led to his call.  Buddle has made one national team appearance in March 2003.

According to the Galaxy report, Buddle had this to say about his selection to the U.S. training camp roster, “Nothing happens before the time.  Right now it’s happened and who knows why I never got called in before.  Timing is everything and maybe it’s my time to show what I can do.”

The action in the first half of the match was controlled by Toronto, as they played a stronger game.  But neither team turned opportunities into goal.

LA Galaxy goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts missed his first match of the season due to a right elbow strain that he suffered during team practice.  Josh Saunders stepped up to the box and filled in for him.

The shutout was the Galaxy’s third straight and seventh in nine games this season.  If LA can keep a clean sheet in their next game against FC Dallas, they will tie the MLS record for most clean sheets in the opening 10 games of the season with eight.
