Landon Donovan’s lone goal gave LA the win against the 2010 MLS Champs – Colorado Rapids
CARSON, Calif. – Friday, September 9, 2011 – The visiting Colorado Rapids, Major League Soccer (MLS) 2010 defending champion, stumbled with second defeat of the season to the Los Angeles Galaxy, falling 1-0 at the Home Depot Center Friday night.
In 2011 league play, the Galaxy swept the Rapids. The first meeting was on June 18th in Colorado, when the Galaxy defeated the Rapids 3-1.
With the one goal win for LA, they become the first MLS team to officially clinch a spot in the 2011 MLS playoff.
After enjoying the better of the first 30 minutes of action and failing to make it count on the score sheet, Galaxy captain Landon Donovan broke through, hammered the ball to the far post for goal in the 36th minute.
A quick pass from David Beckham to Chad Barrett with a shifting cross pass to Sean Franklin under pressure from two defenders sent the ball to Landon Donovan for goal.
This is Donovan’s 12th goal of the regular season.
The game started at a brisk pace with nearly all the possession and chances created by the home side.
Forward Paolo Cardozo started up front in place of Adam Cristman. Cardozo had several clear opportunities at goal, somehow failed to connect.
Galaxy goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts was back in gloves for the first time since breaking his left forearm on June 25 in the San Jose Earthquakes match.
Next MLS match for the Galaxy: Saturday, September 17 at the Home Depot Center against the Vancouver Whitecaps. Match time is at 7:30 p.m. PST.
