Los Angeles Galaxy 1, Portland 0

CARSON, Calif. – (Sunday, June 17, 2012) – Todd Dunivant scored first goal for the Los Angeles Galaxy since May 8, 2010 and gave the Galaxy a much needed win 1-0 over the Portland Timbers Sunday evening at the Home Depot Center.

The defender Todd Dunivant rose to head home corner kick courtesy of midfielder David Beckham in the 61st minute.

With a slight edge in possessions, 53.4% (Portland) vs. 46.6% (LA), Portland pressed on but could not break down the Galaxy wall and did not make up the deficit, giving the Galaxy their first clean sheet this season.

Welcome back LA goalkeeper Josh Saunders who produced four (4) huge saves to deny the visitors a goal.

LA entered the match with a seven game win-less streak, and last place in the Western Conference.  With the win, they are 4-8-2 (win-loss-tie) with 14 points on the regular season. And moved up two places to seven in the west.

Galaxy Head Coach had this to say on the first shut-out this season, “It’s good. I guess it’s been a little rare this year. But, when you get a shutout, it’s not just your goalkeeper; it’s the players in front of him. I think they did a pretty good job for the most part.”

Hector Jimenez, Mike Magee and Michael Stephens, serving suspensions handed out by MLS Disciplinary committee, missed tonight’s match.

The Irishman Robbie Keane also missed the match as he is out on international duty.

Edson Buddle and Dan Keat underwent knee surgery and therefore were unavailable for the match.

LA travels to Utah for their next match against Real Salt Lake on Wednesday, June 20, 2012 at 6 pm PST.
