‘Queen of Katwe’ Leads AMAA’s With 8 Nominations

The  African Movie Academy Awards nominees were recently revealed in Rwanda and the David Oyelowo starrer “Queen of Katwe” earned the most nominations. The colorful true story of a young girl whose world rapidly changes when she is introduced to the game of chess received 8 nominations including nods for cinematography and costume design. A formulaic fairy tale flick about achieving the odds the film, which is directed by Mira Nair (“Salaam Bombay), stars Golden Globe nominee David Oyelowo, Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o who also received acting nods.

Also tapped for nods at this annual event, which recognizes movies from the diaspora, is director Kunle Afolayan’s murder mystery “The CEO,” which stars Haitian actor Jimmy Jean-Louis and Angelique Kidjo. Afolayan’s previous film “October 1” earned the director multiple AMAAs for best director and best picture in 2015.

Established in 2005, the Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) provides a platform for film makers on the continent.

PAFF Executive Director Ayuko Babu and PAFF Director of Programming Asantewa Olatunji serve as jurors for AMAA.
