Liberia celebrates Independence Day – in pictures

Liberia is the first African nation on the continent to gain its independence.

Liberia marked its 170th Independence Day on July 26 and the Liberian-American Community Organization Of Southern California (LACOSC) held a gala to celebrate on Saturday.

Several dignitaries were in attendance, including Congressmember Karen Bass, who served as a guest speaker at the celebration held at the Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles by the non-profit group.

Bass represents California’s 37th congressional district and was presented with a Lifetime membership plaque.

With performances by Liberian American artists Jaway, Kat Lincoln and the enigmatic Liberian entertainer Friday the Cellphone Man, the event commemorated the West African’s country’s declaration of independence from the American Colonization Society in 1847.
