“Romantic comedies are the hardest genres to compose for,” says Aaron Zigman

Zigman is the composer for “Baggage Claim” a romantic comedy which stars Paula Patton and the upcoming film ‘The Other Woman” starring Cameron Diaz.

One of the busiest composers in Hollywood, Aaron Zigman has written music for several movies and television shows from “Sex and the City,” “Alpha Dog,” to “The Proposal.” Among the other movies to whose scores he has contributed to are several Tyler Perry films, “Peeples,”  “ATL,” and “Good Luck Chuck.”

But despite an extensive experience composing music for more than a dozen comedies, Zigman will admit that it’s one of the toughest genres to compose for.

“You don’t get a lot of real estate to spread your wings. The timing of the comedy, the movement, and how you pace that love story and telegraph it can be very challenging.”

In “Baggage Claim,” a film which circles around a flight attendant (Paula Patton) who tries to find a suitor in 30 days, Zigman worked closely with director David E. Talbert to provide a traditional orchestral comedy and certainly mastered the tricky challenge of finding the right tone.

“David is a big score fan and is a fantastic director and he just asked me to write him a great theme. He wanted a broad romantic score and there was no specific pandering to any demographics which I liked,” shares the composer who also wrote the score for the movie “Akeelah and the Bee” and is currently working on the movie “The Other Woman” with Cameron Diaz and Nicki Minaj which releases in theaters April 25.

“There are no color lines when I compose music for what is considered a hugely African-American film. Color doesn’t register for music crosses all boundaries.”
