‘Arrival,’ ‘Rogue One’ ‘Dr Strange’ make VFX Oscar race

Nominations for the 89th Oscars will be announced on Tuesday, January 24, 2017.

nullThe Visual Effects category for the 89th Academy Awards have been narrowed down to 10 films.

They include “The BFG, “Arrival,” “Deepwater Horizon,” “The Jungle Book,” the animated stop motion movie “Kubo and the Two Strings” and Marvel films “Captain America: Civil War” and “Doctor Strange.” “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” which soared at the box office this weekend with over $290 million worldwide also made the cut and marks the second year in a row the Lucasfilm-owned digital effects house Industrial Light & Magic has received a nod for visual effects. Last year, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” received a nomination, but lost to “Ex Machina”  who beat out others contenders which included “The Martian,” “The Revenant” and “Mad Max.”


The Academy’s Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee determined the shortlist and nominations for the 89th Oscars will be announced on Tuesday, January 24, 2017. The 89th Oscars will be held on Sunday, February 26, 2017, at the Dolby Theater at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood, and will be televised live on the ABC Television Network at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT.  The Oscars also will be televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide.
