Ava DuVernay to receive a Visionary Award

DuVernay has been tapped to receive this prestigious accolade from the Black Women in Entertainment Law Foundation (BWEL).

The non-profit organization, BWEL which provides a support network for women of color in entertainment law and scholarships to aspiring female lawyers, will honor filmmaker Ava DuVernay.

DuVernay,  who received the  Best Director Award at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival for her second feature film “Middle of Nowhere,” is a writer, director and producer who has built a solid reputation in the world of indie filmmaking.  The first African American to win Sundance’s best director award, she has successfully transitioned from film publicist to filmmaker with her own production company, the African-American Film Festival Releasing Movement (AFFRM).

At their annual ceremony which will take place on Wednesday, June 26,  at the Hyatt Regency, BWEL will also honor Shawn Holley, a high profile attorney whose clients include Lindsay Lohan, Nicole Richie, Paris Hilton and the Kardashian sisters. Holley will receive the Excellence in Business Award.
