Henry cooly scored in his inaugural match for his new team, getting a goal midway through the first half of a 2-1 exhibition loss to old rival Tottenham on Thursday night.

HARRISON, N.J. _ Thierry Henry got into a New York state of mind for his Red Bulls debut, boarding a commuter rail train at the World Trade Center about 21/2 hours before his first match.

“I was on the PATH train with my friends and with all the fans,” the French star forward said. “For me, it was the quickest way to come to the game, and that’s how I came. It was cool.”

Henry then cooly scored in his inaugural match for his new team, getting a goal midway through the first half of a 2-1 exhibition loss to old rival Tottenham on Thursday night.

“It was amazing to see the fans, walking with them to the stadium,” he said. “I would say that the reception was tremendous every time I touched the ball.”

Henry scored after Estonian national team regular Joel Lindpere played the ball through the legs of defender Alan Hutton, familiar to American fans for his confrontation last season with U.S. forward Jozy Altidore.

A former Arsenal star who left Barcelona to sign with Major League Soccer last week, Henry cut in front of Verdan Corluka at the 6-yard box in the 24th minute and put New York ahead when he slotted the cross past goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini.

“He’ll be a massive hit here in New York I’m sure,” Spurs manager Harry Redknapp said. “He’s a world-class player still. He could play on any team in the Premier League in England. He’s still good enough.”

Robbie Keane, tightly marked by Tim Ream, tied the score in the 62nd minute, tapping the ball into an open net after Andros Townsend’s corner kick was fumbled by goalkeeper Greg Sutton, who replaced starter Bouna Coundoul at the start of the second half.

Jeremy Hall then headed a backpass in the 72nd under pressure from Gareth Bale, who intercepted the one-hopper and put it past the dismayed goalkeeper.

A 32-year-old with a French record 51 international goals, Henry is the highest-profile player to join MLS since David Beckham signed with the Los Angeles Galaxy three years ago. A World Cup and European champion with France, and a Champions League winner with Barcelona, he lost his place in Barca’s starting lineup last season and decided to move to New York, where he long wanted to live.

“He was a tough player over there,” Keane said. “I’m sure he’ll be a tough player over here, as well.”

Playing his first match since France was eliminated from the World Cup with a loss to South Africa on June 22, Henry showed the quick pace and scoring instincts that made him a star since he first became a regular with Monaco in the mid-1990s. He played the first half, and had some deft, quick exchanges with Lindpere. He had a freeing backheel pass and a bicycle kick that went wide.

Just as important for the Red Bulls, he helped draw a crowd of 20,312 _ about 5,000 short of a sellout, to Red Bull Arena, the $200 million stadium that opened in March.

MLS spokesman Dan Courtmanche said Adidas is projected to sell 50,000 Henry Red Bulls jerseys this year, second in MLS history behind the slightly more than 300,000 David Beckham Los Angeles Galaxy jerseys sold when he arrived in 2007.

“This is a massive, massive impact for us,” Red Bulls coach Hans Backe said. “But to be realistic, too, one player can’t in a way change the team totally. He needs his teammates around him to feed him with the right killer passes.”

Henry scored 226 goals for Arsenal from 1999-07, topping the Premier League in scoring four times, and said last week he is reluctant to even speak the name of Tottenham, the Gunners’ north London rival.

He’ll have to wait to pair with Juan Pablo Angel, who missed the match because of a sprained ankle.

Ten Spurs were missing following World Cup duty, including forward Peter Crouch and regular goalkeeper Heurelo Gomes. Cudicini returned during the preseason after injuries sustained in a motorcycle crash while en route to training in November.

Red Bulls supporters sang “Chelsea reject!” at him.

“Fantastic,” Redknapp said. “Where did they get that one from?”

Notes: While on loan to Sunderland last April and playing against Hull, Hutton threw the ball at Altidore, who responded with a head butt that earned him a red card and a season-ending suspension.

Cameras will be installed at every Premier League stadium to provide material for analysis by video game publisher Electronic Arts in time for a planned overhaul of the league's official player ratings system for the 2011-12 season.

LONDON _ While FIFA talks of introducing technology to soccer, England’s Premier League has signed its first official technology partner in a move they hope helps further popularize the sport in the United States.

Cameras will be installed at every Premier League stadium to provide material for analysis by video game publisher Electronic Arts in time for a planned overhaul of the league’s official player ratings system for the 2011-12 season.

FIFA’s lawmaking panel has yet to reconsider the use of goal-line technology since the World Cup, so the cameras cannot be used to aid officials with the sort of controversial decision that involved England at the tournament.

But they will be able to track players’ movements for what EA Sports and the Premier League hopes will be enhanced analysis of the game including shooting speed and distance covered.

The stats may help the sport compete with baseball and football in areas previously resistant to its appeal.

“As someone who lives in the United States and went over there in the 1970s, but also someone who understands American sports very well, Americans need to statistically analyze everything and this is where soccer befuddles them sometimes because it’s too fluid,” EA Sports global president Peter Moore said Thursday. “That U.S. consumer that is used to waking up the next morning and being able to look at every baseball box score.”

The Premier League will continue to provide its existing player index, which placed Frank Lampard top in 2009-10, for next season. The new cameras should be at all 20 clubs for the Aug. 14 kickoff so that EA and the league can spend a full year working on how to improve the index.

“We’re going to be collecting a lot of that information by camera, a lot of new information as well,” Premier League director of sales and marketing Richard Masters said. “The challenge for us is to work out how that information can be used to enhance the performance of the performance index. How do you make it more objective?

“It’s an important part of how we market the league. We need to be providing an enhanced product.”

EA’s deal with the Premier League will see the EA Sport name and logo attached to the player index and team of the week, which are published after each full round of weekend action.

Neither party would disclose the financial details of the arrangement.

“We’re not discussing dollars or pounds or euros but it’s a great deal for us,” Moore said.

Moore, a British-born Liverpool fan, said EA’s involvement will lead to far more accurate ratings.

He said that the data and technology used in the development of 18 editions of EA’s FIFA soccer game and 22 editions of its Madden NFL game allowed it to successfully predict six months ago that Spain would win the World Cup and pick six of the last seven NFL Super Bowl winners.

EA predicts that Chelsea will retain the Premier League title in 2011 by two points from Manchester City. Moore stressed that the prediction is likely to change as player trading continues until the end of the summer transfer window.

“Pure data, pure telemetry, very objective to move the game forward,” Moore said. “In the United States for many years there’s been the technology element of being able to rate performance on an objective basis, rather than the ‘let’s give him 6 out of 10′ mentality that you’ve seen over the years.”

FIFA confirmed this week that goal-line technology will be discussed at October’s International Football Association Board meeting, but only to decide if it is on the agenda for its subsequent meeting in March.

IFAB this week approved the continuation of an experiment using extra officials behind the goals. That could be permanently adopted instead of video technology.

The debate on goal-line technology was rekindled at the World Cup last month when England was denied a goal against Germany because officials failed to see that a shot by Lampard crossed the line after bouncing off the crossbar.

Had the goal been awarded, the score would have been 2-2 after 38 minutes. Instead, Germany went on to win the second-round match 4-1.

“Even baseball now allows video replay _ and baseball’s been played as long as soccer’s been played at a professional level _ for controversial home run calls,” Moore said. “And that’s the equivalent of a goal.

“It is a little part of why we’re starting to think ourselves we need to help bring the game on a par to where we’re seeing other sports around the world.”

Nematandani suggested the Bafana Bafana name, which SAFA uses on much of its official literature and is the popular term in South Africa for the national team, would have to be changed despite being ``a national asset.''

JOHANNESBURG _ South Africa may have to drop its Bafana Bafana nickname because of copyright issues.

The South African Football Association is involved in a dispute with a local businessman who acquired the rights to the name in 1994. SAFA made a reported $10 million profit from the name during the World Cup.

“I want to avoid saying we are very angry about it,” South African Football Association president Kirsten Nematandani said Thursday. “We are worried about it. We are concerned.”

He said the future of the nickname was being discussed “at a national level.”

Nematandani suggested the Bafana Bafana name, which SAFA uses on much of its official literature and is the popular term in South Africa for the national team, would have to be changed despite being “a national asset.”

SAFA began an extended legal battle in 1997 to claim rights over Bafana Bafana, but South Africa’s Supreme Court of Appeal dismissed in 2002 a SAFA motion that it had rights over Bafana Bafana.

There is no indication the current owners of the brand will sue SAFA for using the term, but the country’s soccer association is unable to market it and make money from it.

The issue has also reached South Africa’s parliament in Cape Town.

On Tuesday, the chairman of the influential parliamentary committee on sport said Bafana should be changed if the copyright issue wasn’t resolved, forcing SAFA to address the problem.

“We brought it up because we felt that it was not doing us any good as an association,” Nematandani said at SAFA’s headquarters next door to the Soccer City stadium _ the venue for the World Cup final.

Speaking at a press conference to outline new South Africa coach Pitso Mosimane’s vision for the future of the national team, Nematandani said the public could be asked to choose a new nickname.

“It clearly has to be done the right way, but we cannot go on in this way. It is not proper, it is not correct,” the SAFA president said. “The name of Bafana Bafana came from the public and we are throwing the ball back to the public.”

Bafana Bafana means “the boys, the boys” in Zulu.

It is thought to have been used in the early 1990s by journalists in Soweto to refer to the national team after it was readmitted into international soccer after apartheid.

It was quickly picked up and is the affectionate name by which South African fans refer to their team.

In an Internet poll, it was voted one of the words of the recent World Cup _ along with vuvuzela.

The Lakers said last month that Bryant likely would have surgery this summer to clean up his knee. It wasn't considered urgent, and he made a trip to South Africa for the World Cup before getting it done.

LOS ANGELES _ Kobe Bryant recently underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee, the Los Angeles Lakers revealed Friday.

Bryant will be fully recovered well before training camp opens Sept. 25, the Lakers said in a brief statement. The two-time NBA finals MVP underwent surgery last week.

Bryant’s knee was drained of fluid early in the playoffs, and he played through several additional injuries while leading the Lakers to their second straight title.

The Lakers said last month that Bryant likely would have surgery this summer to clean up his knee. It wasn’t considered urgent, and he made a trip to South Africa for the World Cup before getting it done.

The team hasn’t announced whether Bryant will have surgery on his injured index finger, which was broken late last year and hampered his shot throughout the season.

Center Andrew Bynum also will need surgery on his right knee to repair a partially torn ligament, but Bynum’s surgery was delayed until July 28 due to his doctor’s schedule. Bynum also should be back to full strength before training camp.

Although Bryant is working on rehabilitation for his knee, he played a major role in two signings this month for the Lakers. Veteran guard Derek Fisher and swingman Matt Barnes both cited Bryant’s personal influence as a major reason they signed with Los Angeles to pursue another title.

The Lakers signed veterans Theo Ratliff and Barnes on Thursday, beefing up their bench after winning last season’s title with a top-heavy roster. With free agent point guard Steve Blake also signed this month, the Lakers have 11 players under contract for next season on a roster with strikingly more experience and depth than last season.

General manager Mitch Kupchak said Friday that the Lakers still are in negotiations with guard Shannon Brown, who opted out of his contract to become a free agent. Brown said he wanted to return to the Lakers, and Kupchak still hopes the high-flying guard will be back.

Kupchak also said the Lakers will continue to evaluate second-round draft picks Devin Ebanks and Derrick Caracter during training camp after both performed surprisingly well in summer-league play.

Bryan de la Fuente of Chivas USA U-18 Team picked for U.S. U-20 Team

CARSON, Calif. (Friday, July 23, 2010) - The Chivas USA Under-17 Team starts play today in the fourth annual SUM Under-17 Cup taking place from July 23-29 in Houston, Texas. The tournament includes teams from each of MLS’ 16 clubs, and the Red-and-White will face the New England Revolution today before taking on Toronto FC on Saturday and the Houston Dynamo on Monday. The 16 teams are split into four groups, with the winner of each group advancing to the semifinals and other teams squaring off in placement matches. This tournament is being hosted at no cost to all participants as Soccer United Marketing, adidas, and the MLS teams are covering the costs of player travel, accommodations and other tournament-related expenses.

Chivas USA’s team at the SUM U-17 Cup is made up primarily of players who have just finished the Development Academy season with either the club’s U-16 or U-18 Teams. Among those players are several standouts from the recently-ended 2009-10 season, including a pair of defenders who were selected to the Development Academy U-16 West Conference Starting XI, in Alexis Flores and Marcial Cazares.

Cazares was also selected to the Starting XI for the entire 77-team league. In other youth news, Chivas USA U-18 defender Bryan de la Fuente, who is too old to participate at the U-17 Cup, was one of 18 players selected by United States Under-20 National Team head coach Thomas Rongen for the upcoming Milk Cup in Northern Ireland. One of the most popular youth national trips, the Milk Cup is a prestigious tournament that will provide the U.S. with three international games against China on July 26, Denmark on July 28 and an opponent to be determined in a placement match on July 30. De la Fuente is coming off an excellent seasion with the Chivas USA U-18’s, where he was selected to the Development Academy U-18 Starting XI.
Chivas USA travels to face Real Salt Lake this Saturday, July 24, at 7:00 p.m. PT in a match that will be broadcast live on Prime Ticket, KWHY and W Radio. The Red-and-White will then return home to face the Columbus Crew at The Home Depot Center on Saturday, July 31.

CARSON, Calif – Chivas USA finished the 2010 SuperLiga tournament with a 1-0 victory over Pachuca at the Home Depot Center in front of 14,817 Wednesday night. The Goats were looking to advance in the SuperLiga, but were left out by Houston’s 1-0 victory over Puebla FC.

The Red-and-White attacked early and often. Newly acquired Giancarlo Maldonado put the Goats on the board in the seventh minute. Maldonado got behind the Pachuca defense to receive a perfect long pass from Ante Jazic before taking one dribble and drilling a shot from 18 yards out pass goalkeeper Rodolfo Cota.

The first half ended with both teams looking to score but neither could capitalize on good scoring opportunity’s. Jesus Padilla received a perfectly placed pass in the area from Maldonado, but Padilla’s shot skipped into the waiting hands of Cota.

The Goats played solid defense in the second half led by defenders Carlos Borja and Mariano Trujillo. The defense contained USA World Cup forward Herculez Gomez as Pachuca attacked from all sides but couldn’t find the back of the net.

Chukwudi Chijindu entered as a sub in the 55th minute and gave the Goats fresh legs and speed. Chijindo had several opportunity’s to extend the lead. As the final minutes ran off the clock, Chijindo broke free after juking and jiving passed two Pachuca defenders and the goalkeeper before his final chip rattled off the crossbar.

Chivas USA Head Coach Martin Vasquez, on the match: “I thought it was a good game for us, and obviously the result helps. I’m happy with the effort and happy, at times, with the way we played, and I’m pleased with the young guys coming in and taking advantage of this opportunity.”

The Red-and-White finished in third place of SuperLiga Group A with four points and a 1-1-1. They return to MLS play on Saturday, July 24th, traveling to face MLS Cup Champions Real Salt Lake.

CARSON, Calif. (Saturday, July 17, 2010) – Chivas USA and World Access for the Blind hosted on Saturday a unique soccer clinic for blind children in Orange County at Arena Soccer Park in Garden Grove, Calif. The clinic, led by a certified Chivas USA academy coach, taught the children basic soccer techniques.

The event also helped raise awareness of the blind and demonstrate that they can overcome physical limitations and enjoy sports activities such as soccer. An added treat for the children was a special appearance by Chivas USA Goalkeeper Zach Thornton and the team’s popular mascot, the ChivaFighter. Both were on hand to support the children and to teach them soccer skills.

World Access for the Blind is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to facilitate the self-directed achievement of blind people. To date, they have worked with over 1,000 students in 15 countries worldwide. World Access for the Blind is known for their No Limits attitude. They do not settle for the minimum requirements of functioning but rather believe that the blind are capable of anything and everything. To learn more about the organization or to make a donation to support the soccer clinic, you can check out their website at worldaccessfortheblind.org or visit their facebook page at facebook.com/worldaccessfortheblind.

For the overall tournament including the remaining matches, more than 200,000 tickets have currently been sold, and it can be assumed that the rest of the event will continue to be well attended.

The FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Germany 2010 is well beyond the half-way stage. Tomorrow (Saturday 24 July) the quarter-finals get under way, representing the business end of the tournament not only for the German women’s U-20 team but also for FIFA and the Local Organising Committee, who are quietly confident and optimistic ahead of the remaining matches.

“We’ve had a fantastic tournament so far, and one that has lived up to its World Cup billing in every respect. We’ve had games full of goals and attractive football, an incredible atmosphere and above all a great response from the fans, making this World Cup a real festival of women’s football,” said LOC president Steffi Jones.

The statistics bear this opinion out. Thus far, 79 goals were scored in 24 tournament matches, giving an average of 3.29 per game. Besides, 136,423 spectators have attended the twelve double-headers in Augsburg, Bielefeld, Bochum and Dresden, treating the various teams taking part to a real World Cup atmosphere. An average of 11,369 fans have cheered on the cream of women’s youth football at every match.

“It was our goal to have great attendances, though this incredible result exceeds our expectations. It’s amazing to realise that we had some group matches without the German team with about 18,000 people in the stands. Such figures are a great sign ahead of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2011,” added Steffi Jones.

For the overall tournament including the remaining matches, more than 200,000 tickets have currently been sold, and it can be assumed that the rest of the event will continue to be well attended. For the matches in the forthcoming knock-out phase, including the clash between Germany and Korea DPR, the LOC expects crowds of over 10,000 fans for each match. A large amount of ticket requests have been received for the third-place match and the final that will be staged on August 1 in Bielefeld.

The games involving Germany have been particularly well attended. The opening match – an impressive 4-2 win over Costa Rica which saw all 23,995 tickets for the stadium in Bochum snapped up – was followed by an equally spectacular 3-1 victory over Colombia in the same stadium in front of 15,545 fans, and the final group match – a 4-1 rout of France – was witnessed by no fewer than 26,273 fans spectators in Augsburg, another full house.

With 24 of the 32 matches having been played now, the LOC President was able to draw some early conclusions about the tournament and was highly satisfied with how things have gone thus far. “We’ve done a lot of things right from an organisational point of view,” she commented. “The FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup has been a real joint effort and the support we have had from the cities, regions and regional federations has been fantastic. Everything has clicked into place and the way things are being implemented on-site is near perfect. There’s plenty more enjoyment to come from this tournament, and all the experience we are gaining means that we can look forward to the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2011 with real optimism.”

CARSON, Calif. – Chivas USA of Major League Soccer has acquired Sal Zizzo, a 23-year-old midfielder with experience in Europe and with the United States National Team, in a weighted lottery held on Wednesday afternoon. Zizzo, most recently with Hanover 96 of the German Bundesliga, will join the Red-and-White in training tomorrow morning at 10:30 a.m. on Field 6 at The Home Center, and is expected to be eligible to play in Chivas USA’s July 31 match at home against the Columbus Crew.

Zizzo recently signed a contract with MLS and was placed into a weighted lottery to determine his team in the league, with Chivas USA having the third-best chance at earning Zizzo’s rights, behind D.C. United and the Kansas City Wizards. Chivas USA won the lottery, held in New York on Wednesday afternoon, and Zizzo, currently in San Diego, is expected to begin training with the team tomorrow.

Zizzo has also played for the United States youth teams, starting with the U.S. U-18 Team before playing with the U-20’s for the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup, where he started all five of the team’s matches as the U.S. advanced to the tournament’s quarterfinals. His one appearance with the full United States National Team came in an Aug. 22, 2007 friendly at Sweden.

It was the fourth international friendly this season for the Timbers, who will make the leap to Major League Soccer next season.

PORTLAND, Ore. _ Manchester City of the English Premier League kicked off its summer exhibition tour of the United States with a 3-0 victory over the Portland Timbers on Saturday night.

Stephen Ireland and Emmanuel Adebayor scored quick back-to-back goals for City, which has been training at the Nike corporate headquarters in Beaverton for the past week.

It was the fourth international friendly this season for the Timbers, who will make the leap to Major League Soccer next season.

The game, played at the University of Portland’s Merlo Field, was sold out with all of the 5,018 seats going to Timbers’ season ticket holders.

Manchester City’s travel roster included defender Kolo Toure and midfielder Yaya Toure, brothers who played in the World Cup for the Ivory Coast, as well as French midfielder Patrick Vieira and striker Adebayor of Togo.

The Toure brothers did not play against the Timbers, but Vieira and Adebayor started. Joe Hart was in goal.

Ireland scored in the 43rd minute and Adebayor added a header in the 44th minute to give City the lead. Adam Johnson assisted on both goals, which drained the enthusiasm of the green-and-white clad Timbers Army.

Brazilian striker Jo added a goal in the 68th minute.

“It’s good for my confidence to score goals,” Adebayor said.

“That was really the first length of a game we’ve done,” assistant manager Brian Kidd said. “I thought it was a terrific workout for the boys.”

Earlier this week, Spanish winger David Silva signed a four-year contract with City worth $36.6 million. He was not with the team in Portland.

There were also rumors that Manchester City could be interested in Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder Landon Donovan, although MLS commissioner Don Garber said this week that the league has no intention of accepting transfer offers for the midfielder.

Donovan was the best U.S. player at the World Cup, scoring three goals to become the American career leader with five. He agreed in December to a four-year contract with MLS that pays him a base salary this year of $2.05 million.

Donovan attracted attention in Europe when MLS loaned him to Everton for 10 weeks in January. He scored two goals in 13 matches.

Donovan was open to possibilities when he returned to the Galaxy from the World Cup on July 2.

“Right now, I want to be in America,” he said. “If there’s something serious to look at, then I will. I never say never to anything. But for now, I’m very excited to be home.”

City manager Roberto Mancini was not available to comment on the matter after Saturday’s match.

Next weekend the New York Red Bulls will host Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Sporting Lisbon in the New York Football Challenge at Red Bull Arena in New Jersey.

City also will play Club America at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta on July 28 and Inter Milan in Baltimore on July 31.

Manchester City finished fifth last season, missing out on a place in this season’s Champions League, and will play in the Europa League.

The match was played at Merlo Field because of a conflict at Portland’s home field, PGE Park, which is also home to the Portland Beavers, the Triple-A baseball affiliate of the San Diego Padres.

Portland has played international exhibitions against Costa Rica’s Puntarenas FC, Argentina’s Boca Juniors and Atlas of Mexico this season, going 2-1-0.

Portland coach Gavin Wilkinson said he hoped his players learned from the experience and said the team would go over the film to find ways to improve. The Timbers have a four-game winning streak in their league.

“I’m delighted that we played them,” Wilkinson said. “It’s a tremendous opportunity for the team, the city and the fans.”
