Chivas USA Downed, 3-0, by Columbus Crew on the Road

Red-and-White fall at Crew Stadium after being hurt by three second-half goals

COLUMBUS, Ohio (Sunday, Sept. 7, 2014) – Chivas USA fell, 3-0, to the Columbus Crew Sunday afternoon at Crew Stadium. Columbus’ Justin Meram led the Eastern Conference side’s attack with a second-half brace and Bernardo Anor tallied the third score to finish off the shutout.

The Red-and-White looked to get on the front foot in the first half and tried to put forwards Felix Borja and Ryan Finley into the box early on. In the 22nd minute, Borja set up Nigel Reo-Coker in transition and played the midfielder a short pass to the right of the arc. Reo-Coker then fired on frame but was unable to capitalize on the chance when his shot was deflected, allowing Columbus goalkeeper Steve Clark to secure the threat.

The Crew had a golden chance at taking the advantage after being awarded a penalty in the final minute of the half on the end of a corner kick. As the ball was played in from the right side into the mixer, the referee signaled for the maximum penalty. Yet Columbus’ Federico Higuain could not convert, as he sent his shot crashing off the crossbar.

Columbus opened the scoring in the 52nd minute when Waylon Francis set up Meram on the left wing with space. The forward then pushed the ball to the edge of the 18-yard box and curled his right-footed shot inside the far post to put his side up 1-0.

In the 58th minute, Chivas forward Marvin Chavez nearly leveled the match five minutes after coming on as a sub. Chavez squared up to his marker on the right side of the box, created space to his left and fired a left-footed bender just wide of the second post.

Instead, the Crew doubled the advantage to 2-0 a minute later when Meram placed his strike inside the right post from the arc after capitalizing on a turnover. The home side would go on to add a third goal in the 80th minute when Hector Jimenez linked up with Anor with a cross sent to the back post for a scoring header to cap off the three-point result.

Chivas USA now return home to begin preparations to face defending MLS champ Sporting Kansas City this Friday at the StubHub Center. The match will mark the lone meeting during the regular season between the clubs and will be televised on Time Warner Cable Deportes beginning at 7:30 p.m. (PT). The action can also be heard on ESPN Deportes Radio KWKU 1220 AM. For more information follow the club on Twitter and Facebook.
