David Oyelowo and Taraji P. Henson Receive Critics Choice Awards

Actors David Oyelowo and Taraji P. Henson won prizes on Sunday night at the 5th annual Critics’ Choice Television Awards.

Held by the Broadcast TV Journalists Association, the Critics’ Choice Television Awards took place over the weekend at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills.  The two-hour show that aired live on A&E Network was hosted by Cat Deeley and honored eighteen of the best series in television at a star-studded gala awards show.

On the TV side, HBO was the most awarded network with seven wins, followed by FX with four wins. Taraji P. Henson was honored as Best Actress in a Drama Series for “Empire” and Lorraine Toussaint was named Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for “Orange Is the New Black.” Queen Latifah’s drama “Bessie,” about the Blues singer Bessie Smith, also won Best Movie Made for Television and David Oyelowo was honored as Best Actor in a Movie or Limited Series for his role in the HBO drama “Nightingale” in which he plays an American veteran.

Presenters included Tracee Ellis Ross, Alison Janney, Sarah Paulson, Bill Paxton, Olivier Martinez and Terry Crews.

The Critics’ Choice Television Awards honored programs and performances that aired between June 1, 2014 and May 31, 2015, except for the Most Exciting New Series category, which are shows premiering after May 1, 2015.
