“The Hate U Give,” an adaptation of the New York Times bestselling YA novel will be released two weeks earlier than originally scheduled. The film, which closes the Urbanworld Film Festival in New York City this weekend, was originally scheduled to open in wide release on Friday, October 19th. The distributor Fox 2000 instead will open the film on Friday, October 5th in limited release. Over the following two weeks, Fox will increase the number of theaters putting the film into wide release by the 19th.

Fox employed a similar strategy with other films to great success. Almost two years ago, “Hidden Figures” was originally slated to open wide in early January 2017. However, Fox decided to modify the film’s release strategy and open it in just 25 theaters in late December 2016. Two weeks later, it was in over 2,500 theaters and went on to gross over $200 million worldwide and receive three Oscar nominations.

Amandla Stenberg (“Everything, Everything,” “The Darkest Minds”) toplines the cast of “The Hate U Give.” She plays Starr, a student at a prestigious prep school, whose life is forever changed when she witnesses a friend being killed by a police officer. The film also stars Regina Hall (“Girls Trip,” “Support the Girls”), Russell Hornsby (“Fences”), Issa Rae (“Insecure”), Common (“Selma”), and Algee Smith (“Detroit”).
