Honduras Fans Celebrated a victory against USA

Carlos Pavon gave Honduras an early lead when he scored on a penalty kick in the 17th minute. US Captain Jimmy Conrad earned his second yellow card that led to an early exit to the locker room from referee Benito Archundia — which opened up a penalty kick opportunity for Honduras player Pavon.

Though the U.S. Men’s National Team (US MNT) set a record attendance on Saturday night at the International Friendly match against Honduras at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California, with a crowd of 18,626 to their advantage, Honduras stunned US fans with a 3-1 victory.

“We put ourselves in a bad position and I did not think we had a good start in the game,” said US Head Coach Bob Bradley.  “Whether it was nerves, we were not the sharpest that you want to see at the beginning of the game to establish things.  “I did not think it their effort was good enough.”

This end-of-camp friendly was not a classic US MNT play by any stretch of the imagination.  The three-week January camp was predominantly players who lacked national team experience.  There are 23 players on the roster with 10 caps or less.

Prior to Saturday night’s game, the US MNT had never lost a game at The Home Depot Center.  The fellow 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifier Honduras contested with a sense of urgency.

Honduras scored two more goals before the US finally scored one goal in the 70th minute, when US defender Clarence Goodson headed the ball to the back of the net.  The small number of US fans finally got something to cheer about.

According to former US National Coach Bruce Arena, “Honduras is a much more experience team at the international level and it shows.”

Next up for the USA, they will be traveling to Tampa, Florida for the February 24th game against El Salvador.
