Keane PK’s secured Independence Day victory for the Galaxy

The Galaxy took three points off penalty shots to get a 2-1 win over the Crew.

CARSON, Calif. – (Thursday, July 4, 2013) – The July 4th soccer match at the newly renamed StubHub center saw the home-side Los Angeles Galaxy claim 3 points over Columbus Crew in front of 24,000 strong.

Indeed, the Galaxy 2-1 unconvincing victory was no ‘fiery works’, as Independence Day lady luck was on their side with both goals from the spot.

Both sides went into the locker room scoreless at halftime.  At the match restart, the starting XI remained unchanged.  A breakthrough came late in the 78th minute for Crew Captain Federico Higuain – Argentina international – who was awarded a spot kick 50 yards from the goal line.  The ball rolled off the head of Crew player Bernardo Anor to the back of the Galaxy net and gave the visitors the first genuine point.

The celebration was short lived when the Galaxy was awarded back-to-back penalty kicks.  The first was in the 83rd minute when Crew goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum tripped Galaxy forward Jose Villarreal inside the box.  Galaxy Captain Robbie Keane stepped up and made the PK.

Keane was in the mix again as he draws a foul inside the goal line during the final stoppage time.  The Galaxy Captain was called upon to make a second penalty kick and he keenly converted.

Clearly, the Galaxy had more chances, testing Crew ‘keeper’ Andy Gruenebaum throughout the match.  Looking at the overall stats: Attempts on Goal (Galaxy 23 vs. Crew 8); Corners (Galaxy 10 vs. Crew 1); Possession (Galaxy 59.3% vs. Crew 40.7%).

Gruenebaum was not readily available to speak with CaribPress after the match as he was undergoing treatment.

Upcoming match: LA hosts FC Dallas on Sunday, July 7, while Columbus returns home to host Portland on the same day.  Visit for more details.
