Kevin Hart is the 3rd black comedian to host Oscars solo

The 91st Oscars will air live on Sunday, Feb. 24, on ABC.

88th Oscars®, Academy Awards, TelecastKevin Hart is officially set to host the 91st Academy Awards ceremony solo and joins comedians Chris Rock and Whoopi Goldberg who made history when in 1994 she became the first actor of color to host the Oscars.

Several black actors that include Sammy Davis Jr., Diana Ross and Richard Pryor have co-hosted the prestigious show, but only three actors of color have been solo hosts of the award show in Oscar history.

88th Oscars®, Academy Awards, Telecast“I will be sure to make this years Oscars a special one,” the comedian wrote Tuesday afternoon in an Instagram caption with a photo that displayed a single gold statuette he wrote, adding, “now it’s time to rise to the occasion.”

First-time producers Donna Gigliotti and Glenn Weiss will oversee the show, with Gigliotti serving as producer and Weiss on hand as co-producer and director.

“I appreciate @TheAcademy for the opportunity,” wrote Hart in his post, adding, “For years I have been asked if I would ever Host the Oscars and my answer was always the same…I said that it would be the opportunity of a lifetime for me as a comedian and that it will happen when it’s suppose to.”

The Academy, which has promised that the show won’t run over three hours, has already announced one change — not all the awards in the 24 Oscar categories will be revealed live. Instead, six to eight categories will be announced before the audience at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood during commercial breaks, and edited excerpts from the acceptances will be aired later in the broadcast.87th Academy Awards, Oscars, Arrivals

A former shoe-salesman, Hart has made a name for himself as one of the foremost comedians, entertainers in the industry and he was the first comedian to sell out an NFL stadium, selling more than 50,000 tickets in one show with a hit comedy tour that grossed more than $120 million worldwide.

Some of his film credits include “Night School” with Tiffany Haddish, “Jumanji,” alongside Dwayne Johnson, “Little Fockers,” with Robert De Niro and Ben Stiller, “Death at a Funeral,” “Fool’s Gold” and “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” and television credits include hosting BET’s classic stand-up comedy series Comic View: One Mic Stand, ABC’s The Big House, which he also executive produced and wrote, and recurring roles on “Love, Inc.,” “Barbershop” and “Undeclared.”

Hart is no stranger to the Oscars and presented at the live telecast of the 88th Oscars.  The 91st Oscars will air live on Sunday, Feb. 24
