“Crown Heights” opens in theaters August 25

Nnamdi Asomugha Tackles ActingHe served as executive producer on Idris Elba‘s award winning drama “Beasts of No Nation” and on Ifunanya Maduka’s documentary short “Waiting for Hassana,” about Boko Haram’s 2014 abduction of 276 schoolgirls and he also helped finance Geremy Jasper’s audience favorite “Patti Cake$.”  Now the former NFL player turned producer is tackling an acting role in the upcoming drama “Crown Heights.”

The film is based on a true story adapted from the acclaimed “This American Life” segment by writer/director Matt Ruskin.  Lakeith Stanfield (“Straight Outta Compton,” “Dope“) plays Colin Warner an 18-year-old kid from New York who is wrongfully convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison and Nnamdi Asomugha stars as Carl King, a character who devotes his life to fighting for his childhood friend’s freedom.  King (Asomugha ) works on appeals, takes loans for lawyer fees and becomes a legal courier to learn the court system in order to free his friend.

Some of the best movies ever created have centered on a legal dispute of some kind and one trait they all have in common is that viewers ultimately want to see justice prevail. Asomugha also produces the drama along with Natalie Galazka and director Matt Ruskin.
