Oscar Nominations Make History

The 89th Oscars will be held on Sunday, February 26 at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood.

History was made this morning at the 89th Oscar nominations ceremony​ as black actors were​ nominated in every acting category since the Oscar’s nomination history.​

Joi McMillon became​ the first African-American woman to be recognized by the Academy for editing “Moonlight“​ and the film’s director Barry Jenkins became ​the fourth black director to be nominated for a “Best Director” Oscar (John Singleton, Lee Daniels and Steve McQueen were prior nominees) and Viola Davis received her third Oscar nomination (she was previously nominated for “The Help” and “Doubt”).

This year’s nominations were announced in a pre-taped video package at 5:18 a.m. pacific time​ via a global live stream by Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs, who was joined by Oscar-winning and nominated Academy members Demian Bichir, Dustin Lance Black, Glenn Close, Guillermo del Toro, Marcia Gay Harden, Terrence Howard, Jennifer Hudson, Brie Larson, Jason Reitman, Gabourey Sidibe and Ken Watanabe.

Moonlight

Damien Chazelle’s “La La Land” leads the board with a record ​ 14 nominations, ​Barry Jenkin’s “Moonlight” received 8 nods, Denzel Washington’s “Fences” earned 4, while Hidden Figures has 3.​  Other nominees include “Loving” actress Ruth Negga, who received a
leading actress nod and will face off against Meryl Streep, who  President Trump called “one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood.” Streep received her 20th nomination for the movie “Florence Foster Jenkins.”

Netflix garnered an Academy Award nomination for “13th” from filmmaker Ava DuVernay — marking its fourth consecutive year landing a nod in the documentary category. Netflix’s “13th” will face off in the Oscar race​ against the four other nominated documentaries: “Fire at Sea,” “I Am Not Your Negro,” “Life, Animnated” and “O.J.: Made in America.”

The 89th Oscars will be held on Sunday, February 26 at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood, and will be televised live on the ABC Television Network and televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide.
