Phylicia Rashad joins ‘Empire’

Rashad famously starred on “The Cosby Show” as Bill Cosby’s TV wife, Clair Huxtable.

Rashad“The Cosby Show” alum will portray Diana Dubois, a powerhouse from one of New York’s oldest and most prominent African-American families and mother of ambitious city councilman Angelo Dubois (guest star Taye Diggs).

She joins other previously announced “Empire” guest stars, including Mariah Carey, Sierra McClain, French Montana and Birdman.

In season 3, which premieres next month, Lucious (Terence Howard) pursues his music legacy with his streaming service, while also clashing with his half-brother, Tariq (Morocco Omari), who is leading a federal task force investigating him. Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) aims to start over, in pursuit of her own happiness – a series of flashbacks reveal how Loretha Holloway became Cookie Lyon and how Cookie met Lucious while the Lyon brothers – Andre, Jamal and Hakeem – all are determined to overcome the events of last season and move on.

In more recent years, she had had television roles on NBC’s short-lived “Do No Harm,”),  USA Network’s “Psych” and Lifetime’s “Steel Magnolias. In film, she has appeared in “Creed,” Tyler Perry’s “Good Deeds” and “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow is Enuf.”

“Empire” returns to Fox on Sept. 21 at 9 p.m.
