Powers stars as Rapids down Galaxy 2-0

The Rookie of the Year frontrunner is tied for second on the team in assists, and tied for third in goals.

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (Saturday, July 27, 2013) – Colorado Rapids rookie midfielder Dillon Powers had a goal and an assist in a 2-0 victory over the LA Galaxy on Saturday night at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, which moved Colorado into second place in the Western Conference with 34 points. The Rapids currently only trail rivals Real Salt Lake, who visit next Saturday, August 3 at 6:30 p.m. for the final leg of the Subaru Rocky Mountain Cup.

The Rapids took the 1-0 lead at the end of the first half, when Powers served a corner kick that was headed home by Hendry Thomas, giving the rookie his fourth assist of the year. Powers then scored his fourth of the season just two minutes into the second half, receiving a through ball from Edson Buddle and slotting it to the right of Galaxy keeper Carlo Cudicini. The Rookie of the Year frontrunner is tied for second on the team in assists, and tied for third in goals. The match also saw the return of former Rapids captain Pablo Mastroeni, who started and played 77 minutes for the Galaxy in his first visit to Colorado after his June trade.

Tomorrow, the Rapids Reserves take on the LA Galaxy Reserves at 11 a.m. MT (changed from 10 a.m.) at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park Field 20. Next Saturday, August 3, the Rapids take on Real Salt Lake for the third and final leg of the Subaru Rocky Mountain Cup. The game kicks off at 6:30 p.m. at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, and a Rapids tie or win would bring the trophy back to Colorado for the first time since 2006.
