Radio personality Tom Joyner to receive NAACP’s Vanguard Award

This award is presented to individuals whose work increases awareness of racial and social issues.

Tom JoynerMedia icon Tom Joyner will join previous recipients Aretha Franklin, Prince and Russell Simmons in receiving one of the NAACP’s special award – The  Vanguard Award.

The radio personality hosts the nationally syndicated The Tom JoynerMorning Show, and  is also founder of Reach Media Inc

“It was only fitting to celebrate him with this award,” shared NAACP  President Derrick Johnson. “He has been a staple within the Black community not only on the airwaves but also as an activist and advocate, contributing to society and paving the way for our youth. ”

Joyner first gained popularity after earning the nickname “The Fly Jock” while flying round-trip between Dallas and Chicago five days a week for seven years to host morning drive and afternoons in two different cities and became one of the dominant communicators in the country reaching an incredibly loyal and responsive audience every weekday morning.

He will be presented with the accolade at  the 50th NAACP Image Awards on Saturday, March 30th at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
