South African film competes for Foreign Language Oscar

The 88th Academy Awards nominations will be announced live on Thursday, January 14.

Ernest Nkosi's film The Two Of UsEighty-one countries have submitted films for consideration in the Foreign Language Film category for the 88th Academy Awards including South Africa’s “Thina Sobabili: The Two of Us.”

The  film, directed by Ernest Nkosi, who also doubles as writer and producer, is set in Alexandra (South Africa) and follows a brother and sister’s life journey. The film was released nationally to Ster Kinekor and Nu Metro Cinemas, South Africa July and opened 8th at the box office.

Some of the other notable films in the norms race include Dominican Republic’s “Sand Dollars,” India’s  “Court” and  Ethiopia’s “Lamb,” which is directed by Yared Zeleke.

The 88th Academy Awards nominations will be announced live on Thursday, January 14, at 5:30 a.m. PT at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, Calif.
