HARRISON, N.J. (AP) _ Estonian midfielder Joel Lindpere scored on a sparkling 19-yard shot in the 40th minute of his Major League Soccer debut, and New York opened the season by beating the Chicago Fire 1-0 Saturday night in the first official match at $200 million Red Bull Arena.

It was 39 degrees at gametime, 34 degrees cooler than the previous Saturday when the stadium opened with the Red Bulls beating Brazil’s Santos 3-1 in an exhibition. Perhaps that’s why there were pockets of empty blue seats at the 25,000-seat, two-deck stadium, where attendance was announced at 24,572.

New York improved to 4-0-3 in its last seven home openers and

made MLS home teams 4-1-3 in the first games of soccer-specific

stadiums.

Dynamo 1, FC Dallas 1, tie

FRISCO, Texas (AP) _ Atiba Harris scored in the 38th minute and FC Dallas tied Houston.

Harris dribbled around Dynamo defender Bobby Boswell and curled a right-footed shot from 15 yards away into the right corner of the net.

Two minutes earlier, the Dynamo took a 1-0 lead after Mike Chabala scored his first career MLS goal in the 36th minute. Chabala took a sliding shot from the top of the penalty box with his right foot that landed inside the left corner of the net. Crew 2, Toronto FC 0

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) _ Guillermo Barros Schelotto scored one goal and assisted on another to lead Columbus.

The Crew went ahead in the 29th minute. Andy Iro was 7 yards in front of the goal when he took a free kick from Schelotto that started near the right sideline. Iro headed the ball toward the left post and the ball skipped once before crossing the goal line.

Schelotto got the insurance goal in the 87th into an open net

after goalkeeper Stefan Frei collided with Crew defender Danny

O’Rourke on the fringe of the penalty area.

Galaxy 1, Revolution 0

CARSON, Calif. (AP) _ Edson Buddle scored in the sixth minute to give Los Angeles a win its season opener.

Buddle converted a 6-yard diving header off Landon Donovan’s 32-yard free kick. Goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts needed to make just one save for the shutout.

Galaxy midfielder Eddie Lewis left the game in the 26th minute with a left foot contusion. New England’s Kevin Alston tripped Lewis in the 18th minute and received a yellow card. Real Salt Lake 3, Earthquakes 0

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) _ Javier Morales scored two goals and Fabian Espindola had a goal and an assist as MLS Cup championship Real Salt Lake opened its season with a victory.

Morales hammered home a 35-yard shot on the bounce to open the scoring in the 14th minute, then scored again in the 54th minute with a curling free kick from the top of the penalty box.

Espindola’s goal came in the 27th minute. San Jose defender

Jason Hernandez attempted to break up a pass from Morales, but the

ball went to Espindola, who chipped it over charging goalkeeper Joe

Cannon.

Wizards 4, United 0

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) _ Ryan Smith had a goal and an assist in his Major League Soccer debut for Kansas City.

Smith, who left English side Crystal Palace earlier this year when his contract expired, assisted on Davy Arnaud’s first-half goal for a 2-0 lead and made it 3-0 with a putback in the 54th minute.

Danish keeper Jimmy Nielsen, who joined the Wizards after they traded MLS career saves, wins and shutouts leader Kevin Hartman’s rights to FC Dallas, made three saves in his league debut.

Galaxy Coach Bruce Arena and Revolution Coach Steve Nicol

March 27, CARSON, Calif. — Edson Buddle header gave the Los Angeles Galaxy their first game win over the New England Revolution (Revs) at The Home Depot Center on Saturday night.

The Galaxy quickly secured three points to start off the 2010 Major League Soccer (MLS) season opener. The game ended with Galaxy 1 goal to none for Revs.

Galaxy put their mark down in the first 6 minutes of the game.

New England’s midfielder Joseph Niouky #23 made a foul slide tackled against LA’s defender Todd Dunivant #2 giving up a free-kick. Captain Landon Donovan made the 32-yard free-kick which Buddle converted into a header goal.

Midfielder Eddie Lewis left the game in the 26th minute with a left foot contusion injury. Lewis was replaced by Alex Cazumba. The Galaxy’s three new Brazilian players, Alex Cazumba, Juninho and Leonardo, each made their Galaxy and MLS debuts in the game.

The Revolution made only one shot on the goal and were quickly halted by the Galaxy’s keeper, the Jamaican big man, Donovan Ricketts. He ended with a clean sheet and looked a bit more confident in the box as he entered into his second season with the club.

At the post game press conference Coach Bruce Arena had this to say.

“We are certainly happy with the 3-points in the opener game, we struggled last year to get 3-points, it took 4 games last year.”

After the game, Galaxy’s striker Buddle said, “It’s was nice for us to be able to score in front of the home crowd.”

And continued to say, “It was a good ball, we had to accept the pace early in the game and Landon’s good service at a good pace and I was able to redirect the ball to the target.” “I am to score so quickly in the season. With Bruce giving me a little confidence and saying that I am going to be here — It really helps to move forward.”

He concluded, “Staying healthy is one thing I want to do to help maintain consistent scoring.”

The Galaxy returns to the field on Thursday against their housemate Chvias USA with the first kick slated for 8PM.

The league and the union agreed on a new five-year collective bargaining agreement Saturday.

CARSON, California _ Landon Donovan says negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement in Major League Soccer went quickly once the league’s officials understood the rationale behind the players’ positions.

“The overall tone was that if things were unfair, they made concessions immediately,” the Los Angeles Galaxy star said Sunday. “When we explained things or explained situations, and when they could see that they didn’t make sense or were unfair, they made concessions.

“When we saw that, we knew that there was going to be a deal done.”

Donovan, a member of the union’s executive board, attended the meetings in Washington, D.C. with the Galaxy’s two other player representatives, Chris Klein and Todd Dunivant.

The league and the union agreed on a new five-year collective bargaining agreement Saturday.

“He didn’t just come in at the end and save the day,” Dunivant said of Donovan. “He was part of the whole process. Even when he was in England, he was on all the conference calls. When he came back, it was a no-brainer that he was going to be there.”

Donovan had played on loan with Everton in England’s Premier League for 10 weeks. He went to Washington two days after returning to California.

“Having him at the table definitely helped because he brings a sense of credibility and he’s a guy to listen to,” Dunivant said. “He gives an authoritative presence to the table.”

Donovan downplayed his role.

“I think we had almost 30 guys there,” Donovan said of the other players’ representatives. “When the league sees at least one member from every team, I think (officials) realize how important everything was to us.”

Donovan also gave credit to MLS commissioner Don Garber for the settlement.

“He was right in the heart of it,” Donovan said. “It shows that he was dedicated. Without his presence there, it wouldn’t have gotten done, either.”

Being present at the negotiations taught Donovan more about football’s inner workings, he said.

“It’s important to see both sides,” he said. “While we want everything to be advantageous to the players, there are realities. When you hear the other side and why they do things a certain way, you realize that this is a business. They’re trying to make decisions in the best interest of everyone.”

The Galaxy ended preseason competition with a scoreless draw against CD Aguila, a finalist for El Salvador’s championship last year. Los Angeles will begin the season at home against the New England Revolution on March 27.

NEW YORK _ Glasgow Rangers midfielders DaMarcus Beasley and Maurice Edu were among 20 players picked for the United States’ exhibition at the Netherlands next Wednesday _ the last match before American coach Bob Bradley selects his World Cup roster.

Aris Thessaloniki forward Eddie Johnson also was chosen Thursday but Freddy Adu, his teammate on the Greek club, was bypassed.

Just three players from Major League Soccer were selected: defenders Jonathan Bornstein and Heath Pearce, and forward Robbie Findley. Sixteen players are based in Europe, including nine with English clubs, and one in Mexico: midfielder Jose Torres.

Players will start gathering Sunday for the match in Amsterdam. The U.S. will wear its new World Cup uniforms for the first time Wednesday.

A veteran of two World Cups, Beasley has 17 goals in 89 appearances but has not played for the U.S. since June 18. That was when he allowed Landon Donovan’s corner kick to roll past him, leading to Brazil’s second goal in a 3-0 victory at the Confederations Cup.

After appearing in just three matches for Rangers this season through November, Beasley regained his form and scored twice in five games in December before straining a thigh during training. The 27-year-old from Fort Wayne, Ind., was sidelined from Dec. 19 to Feb. 14.

Edu had just one appearance for the Americans last year, entering as a 90th-minute substitute March 28 in a World Cup qualifier at El Salvador. The 23-year-old from Fontana, Calif., injured a knee ligament May 24 and had surgery June 4. He didn’t return to action until Dec. 27 and played four games before being sidelined with an ankle problem until Feb. 17. Edu has five goals in 11 international appearances.

Johnson, a 25-year-old forward on loan to Aris from Fulham, scored once with the Greek club _ off a pass from Adu.

A half-dozen players are out with injuries: AC Milan defender Oguchi Onyewu (Oct. 21 surgery to repair ruptured patellar tendon in his left knee); Hannover defender Steve Cherundolo (injured a shoulder in practice Jan. 31); Fulham midfielder Clint Dempsey (injured right knee on Jan. 17); Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder Ricardo Clark (pulled right calf muscle); Aarhus midfielder Benny Feilhaber (damaged ankle cartilage); and Sochaux forward Charlie Davies (recovering from injuries sustained in Oct. 13 car crash).

The U.S. has played two warmups this year using mostly MLS players: a 3-1 loss to Honduras and a 2-1 victory Wednesday night over El Salvador. In addition to the three MLS players, the only holdover from Wednesday’s match is IK Start defender Clarence Goodson.

After the match against the third-ranked Netherlands in Amsterdam, the No. 14 Americans will gather in mid-May and play exhibitions against the Czech Republic (May 25, possibly in East Hartford, Conn.) and Turkey (May 29 at Philadelphia). The U.S. plays England on June 12 in its World Cup opener before meeting Slovenia six days later and finishing the first round against Algeria on June 23.

The roster:

Goalkeepers: Brad Guzan (Aston Villa, England), Marcus Hahnemann (Wolverhampton, England), Tim Howard (Everton, England)

Defenders: Jonathan Bornstein (Chivas USA), Carlos Bocanegra (Rennes, France), Jay DeMerit (Watford, England), Clarence Goodson (IK Start, Norway), Heath Pearce (Dallas), Frank Simek (Sheffield Wednesday, England), Jonathan Spector (West Ham, England)

Midfielders: DaMarcus Beasley (Glasgow Rangers, Scotland), Alejandro Bedoya (Orebro, Sweden), Michael Bradley (Borussia Moenchengladbach, Germany), Landon Donovan (Everton, England), Maurice Edu (Glasgow Rangers, Scotland), Stuart Holden (Bolton, England), Jose Torres (Pachuca, Mexico)

Forwards: Jozy Altidore (Hull, England), Robbie Findley (Salt Lake), Eddie Johnson (Aris, Greece)
