Yoruba Richen wins best documentary award

“The New Black” premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival in June and went on to win Audience Awards at AFI Docs and Philly Q Fest and Frameline LGBT Film Festival.

The documentary filmmaker who has directed and produced films in the U.S, Africa and South America was a winner at the 17th Annual Urbanworld Film Festival.

Her latest film “The New Black” about homophobia in the African-American community follows two young black lesbian activists.

Presented by BET Networks, the festival opened with a screening of the romantic comedy “Baggage Claim” at the SVA Theater in Manhattan. Director David E. Talbert was on hand to present the film along with his wife and executive producer Lyn Talbert. Cast members Paula Patton, Derek Luke, Jill Scott, Jenifer Lewis and Rickey Smiley also participated in a post-screening Q&A moderated by The Grio entertainment editor Chris Witherspoon.

One of the largest internationally competitive festivals, The Urbanworld Film Festival was held September 18-22 in New York and concluded Sunday with an awards reception at Tribeca Grill Loft hosted by style and beauty expert Tai Beauchamp and actor/producer Gbenga Akinnagbe.
